SpaceX’s Starlink is a game changer for internet connectivity at great speeds for a relatively low upfront and monthly cost. The Starlink Mini can easily fits inside a backpack so it can be carried on a plane (or hike) and if you are truly off-grid, it can be run off a small battery pack that can easily be recharged daily from solar. The current monthly fee for the roam package for the Starlink Mini at the time of writing is $50 which includes 50 gb of data and then is $1 per gig after that.
The other option is one of the many standard sized Starlink models. The downside is they are larger than a backpack so it would need to be checked if you are flying to destinations due to size, and it also needs more power. The upside is they are generally faster than Starlink Mini. It has a higher monthly fee and that comes with no usage cap.
We love Starlink! It’s allowed us to connect in remote areas like while camping in BLM land in Nevada where there isn’t a soul in sight let alone internet. We’ve taken it to national park’s like Big Bend in Texas. It’s gone on road trips with us where we can power it via a cigarette lighter and point it out the glass roof or out the windshield as we drove (they make suction type accessories so you don’t need to hold it there). We did a sailing trip where it allowed us to check weather, watch our routes, and check in with family as we made our way around the various islands. To pay for an add-on services like that is what we paid for the cost of the unit. It was a no brainer.
At the time of writing this, the Gen 3 standard model cost $199 and the Starlink Mini cost $599. When we go to various countries, it’s really expensive and/or to get fast data. Staying online for work is sometimes a risk because the hotels and Airbnb’s may have spotty service. But, if you bring your own and you know it works, you have much higher odds of successfully staying on top of work.
