Wing Walking in Sequim & Seattle, Washington in 2 days

Reading Time: 4 minutes

If you’re looking to pack a lot of excitement into a short trip – Seattle and Sequim, Washington offer a perfect blend of urban exploration and adrenaline-pumping adventure. Sequim is home to Mason Wing Walking – the only place in the world you can climb into a plane and while in air you can climb on to the wing where the plane then does barrel rolls, hammer heads, and more! The Wing Walking experience was a belated birthday gift experience for Rodney so we squeezed both into a 2 day trip.

Here’s a detailed itinerary of how we spent two action-packed days visiting top tourist destinations in Seattle and experiencing the thrill of Wing Walking in Sequim.

Day 1: Exploring Seattle

Morning: Pike Place Market and Waterfront

After you fly in and grab a rental car, don’t waste any time, hop over to Seattle’s iconic Pike Place Market. As one of the oldest continuously operated public farmers’ markets in the United States, it’s a bustling hub of fresh produce, seafood, and artisanal goods. Be sure to watch the famous fish toss at Pike Place Fish Market, see the bubble gum wall, and grab a coffee at the original Starbucks.

Just a short walk from Pike Place Market is the Seattle Waterfront. Here, you can take a leisurely stroll along the piers, enjoy the views of Elliott Bay, and visit the Seattle Great Wheel for panoramic views of the city and Puget Sound. We love rooftop spots so we grabbed an app at Nest in the Thompson which has unobstructed rooftop views.

Afternoon: Space Needle and Chihuly Garden and Glass

No trip to Seattle is complete without a visit to the Space Needle. Take the elevator to the top for breathtaking 360-degree views of the city, Mount Rainier, and the surrounding waterways. Adjacent to the Space Needle is the Chihuly Garden and Glass, where you can marvel at Dale Chihuly’s stunning glass sculptures.

Evening: Dinner & Drive to Sequim

It’s a 2 hour drive from Seattle to Sequim so grab an early dinner at one of the great restaurants along the waterfront then headed to Sequim to post up for the night. Be sure to have flat footed shoes to wear for wing walking, it’s one of the few things you need. If not, start looking for a pair of Vans or Keds that will surly do the trick.

Day 2: Wing Walking in Sequim

Morning: Wing Walking Prep

Mason Wing Walking starts early to prep the new students on the moves you will learn and how to move around the plane. Our class had 4 students with the pilot and his wife as the instructor. Their children are all proficient in wing walking as well which is comforting seeing as they’re literally little children.

After the safety briefing you will go through repetitive ground training until you show you are proficient. It turns out wing walking skills are very much like rock climbing skills where you must always have three points of contact. They teach you hand motions so you can communicate with the pilot while you’re up there.

We learned that the pilot must wear a parachute but it is actually illegal for the wing walkers to wear a parachute.

Midday: Mason Wing Walking

Training for our group was 4 hours. After you’ve been cleared, you and the other students in your session will start to go up one by one for a roughly 20-30 minute session. Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime! The sensation of soaring through the sky with nothing between you and the open air is unmatched and an interesting experience that makes for a fun talking point.

Afternoon: Explore Sequim

After your Wing Walking adventure, take some time to explore Sequim. Between the lavender fields during blooming season (usually late spring/summer) and the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge – you’ll find quite a few places to decompress after your death defying feat. Take a peaceful walk where you’ll have stunning views of the Dungeness Spit. The restaurants are limited but we really loved Oak Table Cafe.

Evening: Return to Seattle & Fly Home

Head back to Seattle in the evening where you might even be able to fly home the same night.

Tips for a Successful Trip

  • Plan Ahead: Both Seattle’s attractions and Mason Wing Walking can be busy, especially during peak tourist season. Mason Wing Walking often books out months in advance so it’s best to reach out to get your name on their books or on their waitlist!
  • Dress Comfortably: Seattle’s weather can be unpredictable. Bring layers and comfortable shoes for walking. For Wing Walking, follow the specific attire guidelines provided by Mason Wing Walking which for us included flat shoes and no loose clothing or jewelry.
  • Capture the Memories: Both Seattle and Wing Walking offer numerous photo opportunities that you’ll want to remember. Mason Wing Walking has mounted cameras on the planes to help you get footage from your experience but you’ll want to savor everything else from your trip as it’ll be over in flash!

This whirlwind trip is perfect for adventure seekers and city explorers alike. Whether you’re marveling at the skyline from the Space Needle or experiencing the rush of Wing Walking, Seattle and Sequim promise an unforgettable experience.
